So, you want to become an infamous Lyleman?

Well, have you taken a tour of the campus and/or the scholarship halls? If you haven't, I would recommend taking a tour of both.

If you don't have time or can't make the trip, then take a virtual tour to get a better feel for the campus, and browse this site to figure out what being a Lyleman is all about.

If you are already set on coming to KU and becoming a Lyleman then I would direct you here to the Office of Admissions and Scholarships to start your application process and here, the Department of Student Housing. They are two separate entities so you will have to send applications to both. Also, living in the scholarship halls requires a special application and a short essay about yourself.

Why choose the scholarship halls?

The kitchen(s) is/are open 24/7.
It generally costs $1500-1800 less than living in the dorms or a fraternity.
The people you meet are from every walk of life and from all over the world. It is a very diverse community.
Doing the shifts (either cooking for the guys or cleaning a public area) is fun and easy, and usually only takes between two and four hours per week.
You're able to come and go as you please.
There is no initiation or "pledge" status; everyone is equal.
There is never a boring moment. There is always something to do or someone to hang out with.

You're within easy walking distance of the campus, the Kansas Union, and downtown Mass Street.
Our building's fourth floor is the home of the infamous Wilbur Q. Nether.
We have a pretty sweet basketball court/picnic area behind the building.
Our hall prepares some of the best food available in the scholarship hall community.
The fact that our accommodations are not quite as nice as some of the other scholarship halls (ahem, K.K. and Krehbiel) makes us more humble and easy to get along with. It also means that we actually have to interact with the other men in the hall. (we don't have the accommodations, we have our awesome Lylemen.)

Lofting Your Bed

Beds come naturally bunked from Housing with a twin mattress in a twin extra-long bed frame.
6-8 Lylemen per semester bunk their beds generally for extra room and couches as the rooms we have are not that big for two fully grown men. (2 Lylemen per room, with both Lylemen needing to loft their beds.)
Cost per loft is about $80-100 per loft (1 loft supports 1 person.)
Roommates tend to decide together, and have decided once the school year has started.
Expect 2-8 hours building/setting up the lofts depending on how many people there are, and how complex the loft is.
Lofts are sometimes purchased at the end of the semester by Lylemen moving out.
Lofts are usually built by the owners with materials from a hardware/lumber store.
Companies that sell premade lofts generally don't have an easy time working with the Scholarship Halls as they tend to think the bunked beds in our rooms are a lofting bed set.
